A keen gardener and cyclist, Ali took this photograph while on vacation on south Germany’s famous ‘Flower Island’ of Mainau on Lake Constance. There was virtually no planning behind it, admits Ali. “I only have a simple camera and do not carry it with me all the time so I was really astonished to be a winner,” she says. Normally more at home photographing flowers in her own garden, this was an unexpected triumph.

Why should people participate in the Syngenta Photo Prize 2010
and what makes a winning shot?

"If you like to take photos on your holidays or of special events, I think you are already doing enough to participate because that’s when you take your best photos. I took my shot during our holiday in 2008 on the Island of Mainau in Bodensee and I entered it to see what would happen. And I won third prize in the Syngenta Photo Prize 2008. So I think anyone can win, even with a simple camera and everyday subjects. "
