FIRST PRIZE 2010

Nigel Hallett, Australia
Category: External
Image name: “Summer scorcher”

Nigel works as photographer for The Colac Herald, a local newspaper in
South West Victoria, Australia.

This picture of a farmer taking a break from his exhausting work is Nigel’s prize-winning interpretation of “Bringing plant potential to life”. “Bringing plant potential to life is a process that starts from our hardworking farmers,” he says. "Without these dedicated people and the effort they put into fulfilling the potential of their crops, we would lack the food the population needs to survive."

How did you come to take this particular image?

"I was looking to take a photo to demonstrate the extreme conditions of a heatwave we were experiencing in Colac at the time. I came across Nalangil farmer Peter Williamson cooling off while he was facing the challenges the weather was throwing at him. I wanted to show the hardships our farmers go through to make a livelihood and produce food for people and livestock. When I returned and downloaded the image I had a second glance at the photograph I had captured – I thought it was a perfect example of ‘Bringing plant potential to life’."
