Syngenta Photography Award Frequently Asked Questions
Who can enter the Syngenta Photography Award?
The Open Competition is open to any photographer aged 18 years or over on August 31, 2016 - whether amateur, professional or student. However, the Professional Commission is only open to professional photographers. Entrants in either category cannot be involved in the organization or judging of the Award.
Who is considered a professional photographer?
A professional photographer earns the majority of his/her income from photography, sells or publishes his/her work regularly, or belongs to professional photography organizations.
Can I enter both the Open Competition and the Professional Commission?
If you are a professional photographer, you can participate in both the Open Competition and the Professional Commission, but you will have to submit different photographs for each entry.
How do I submit my photographs?
All photographs should be submitted to the Syngenta Photography Award website (www.syngentaphoto.com). Submissions by email or on paper cannot be accepted, and any hardcopy materials sent to us will not be returned. If your images exist only as hardcopies, please scan them into a digital file and upload them via our website.
Do I have to pay to participate in the Syngenta Photography Award?
No. Entries for The Syngenta Photography Award are free of charge.
How many photographs can I upload?
For the Open Competition, you can upload up to 3 individual images.
For the Professional Commission, you can upload a series of 5-10 images.
What is considered a "series"?
For the Professional Commission, a series consists of at least 5 and no more than 10 photographs with a common theme or concept and a single title. Please ensure your photographs work together as a whole, as they will not be judged individually.
In which format should I submit my photos?
Photos can be in colour or black and white. They must be in jpeg format; at least 300 dpi, with a minimum size of 1200 x 2500 pixels and a maximum file size of 5 MB.
Can I submit manipulated photographs?
Yes. Your photos can be manipulated – just make sure you indicate this in your description of the photograph in the entry form.
Can I submit photographs taken many years ago?
Your photos must have been taken in the past 10 years (after January 1, 2006).
When submitting a photo for the Professional Commission, what should I include in the artist statement?
Your artist statement is a great way to engage others in your photography. It should include information about the history and the setting of your series. It should not be longer than 500 words, and must be in English.
Can I change my photographs after submission?
No, however you will be able to upload, save, and change your entry as often as you wish before pressing the "submit" button. But once you have agreed to the Terms & Conditions and pressed "submit", your entry is final and cannot be changed.
How will I know my entry has been submitted successfully?
After submitting your entry by hitting the “submit” button, you will receive an email confirming that your entry has been submitted successfully.
Can I see my submitted photographs on your website?
Some photographs submitted for the Open Competition may be displayed on the homepage of the Syngenta Photography Award website during the entry period, although details of photographer will be kept anonymous. Entries for the Professional Commission are confidential and no work will be shown before the winners are announced.
Are release forms required when submitting my photographs?
You must own all rights to any photographs submitted to the Syngenta Photography Award. This includes, but is not limited to, the documented consent of identifiable human beings (model release). It is your responsibility to ensure that the use of your photographs by Syngenta raises no legal claims.
Do I retain the copyright in my submitted photographs?
Yes. Copyright in all photographs submitted to the Syngenta Photography Award remain with the respective entrants. Any photos submitted to the Syngenta Photography Award may only be used by Syngenta for marketing, promotional or educational purposes relating to the Syngenta Photography Award. Photographs submitted will not be used for any other purpose (such as commercial advertisement or marketing activities of Syngenta products).
Will my photographs be used in any other way?
Any photo you submit may be used by Syngenta for marketing, promotional or educational purposes relating to the Syngenta Photography Award. See our Terms & Conditions for details.
Should I add watermarks or copyright information to my photos?
No. Your photos must be clear of any copyright information so your identity is not revealed.
Can I enter my photographs in other competitions?
Submitted photographs cannot be entered into any other competition until the results of the Syngenta Photography Award have been published.
If my photograph does not win, can I appeal?
No. The judging panel's decision is final.
What is the closing date for the Syngenta Photography Award?
The competition – both the Open Competition and the Professional Commission – closes August, 2016.
